Indigenous Skills

This activity explores basic practices and knowledgeable insights of local Mi’kmaq communities and their crafting traditions. Using the instructions and materials provided by Skills Canada – Nova Scotia and guidance from Rose Meuse of Bear River, students will create their own mini birchbark canoe and explore the significance and history behind it.

Time required to complete this activity: 30-45 minutes.

Recommended grade: Appropriate for grades 6-12.
