Skilled Futures – Fall Wrap Up

Wow! What an awesome start to the school year! This fall the Skills team had the privilege of working with faculty, staff and student mentors at the NSCC Marconi, Kingstec, Pictou and Strait Area campuses to facilitate four Skilled Futures events. 343 students in grades 8 to 12 explored careers in Automotive Service, Carpentry, Marine Engineering, Welding and many other skilled trades and technologies.

In early November, in conjunction with our Skilled Futures for Women event, SCNS held the Women in Skills Gala in collaboration with Women Unlimited and Techsploration. The Gala was an evening of celebration and mentorship that offered junior and senior high school girls the opportunity to learn from female leaders in skilled trades and technologies. We were joined by young female students, parents, educators, alumnae and industry and government officials. The event was a wonderful evening filled with many stories, laughter and educational discussion around the realities women pursuing careers in skilled trades and technologies.

This semester’s success would not have been possible without the generous support of our partners at NSCC, Nova Scotia Apprenticeship Agency, Nova Scotia Department of Energy, Nova Scotia Department of Education and Early Childhood Development and Department of Labour and Advanced Education
