Essential Skills Workshops – Fall 2016

This fall the Skills team introduced a new programming opportunity for schools across the province, the Essential Skills Challenge.

Nearly 890 students from grades 5 to 12 participated in teams to complete a series of hands-on challenges that tested their nine essential skills: reading text, oral communication, numeracy, digital, writing, continuous learning, document use, thinking, and working with others. Students built marble towers, wired a siren with Snap Circuits, completed digital puzzles, and much more.

The challenges demonstrate the need to develop these skills and how they are used from home, to school, to the workplace.

“As an O2 teacher, this presentation was great to get the kids thinking about skills they need to have. It was great to seem them learning and competing to solve the various tasks. Great program!”

This semester’s success would not have been possible without the generous support of the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development.

We are excited to hit the ground running in 2017 with even more Essential Skills Challenges. To find out how you can book a Challenge in your school or for your community group, contact promotions@skillsns.ca
