In 2016, for the first time ever, a Canadian flag was waving on the podium at the International Abilympics. The Abilympics, or “Olympics of Abilities” showcases the abilities of persons with disabilities in skilled trades and technologies. The event consisted of over 600 competitors from over 35 countries.

Skills Canada – Nova Scotia sent 5 competitors to Bordeaux, France to demonstrate their skills on the world stage: Chelsea Demmings (photography), Ricky Mailloux (cooking), Helena Mabbett (welding), Madison Somers (aircraft maintenance) and Amanda Langthorne (hairdressing). During the closing ceremonies, Madison, Helena, and Amanda were all called to the stage to accept the silver medals in their contest areas.

Over 7 months of training really paid off for these talented women. They proved that no matter what life may have in store, when you follow your passion you can achieve your dreams.
